Teens & Addiction

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT A LESSON ON DRUG AND ALCOHOL COULD BE SO MUCH FUN!

We were super privileged to have Rob and Sandy Frey, from our church’s own C.R. (Chemical and Recovery) Addiction Ministry; as well Captain Niemand from SAPS (South African Police Services) share on the effects of chemical addiction. This devotion, which happened on Saturday 18 June 2016, was well received and really fun.

We started off by looking at the definition of addiction, using Romans 7:14-25 as a reference; “…For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate to do…”. We also discovered some interesting stats, that one in every five teens in South Africa either lose their lives or are placed in an institution as a result of drugs or alcohol. Sadly, we heard that Primary schools are targeted and children as young as 10 years old are buying tattoos laced with LSD. This is really scary because our young children and teens are in danger of falling prey to this life threatening situation.

Captain Niemand, who has 25 years’ experience in dealing with drugs and alcohol abuse in teens and young adults, was not only informative but very funny. Everyone enjoyed listening to him. He was relatable, entertaining and created an environment where we felt free to participate openly. He shared some of his own addiction stories with great humour, and conveyed the devastating effects that addiction has on our lives.

God used Captain Niemand in a powerful way to share thistopic. We will definitely look at getting Captain Niemand back for another session later this year.
